Park and Facility Visitation Trends - Canada (1992 - 2005)

Through the General Social Survey, Statistics Canada collects visitation information related to several leisure activity categories. The table below compares 1992, 1998 and 2005 and looks at the percentage of Canadians over 15 years of age who had visited the type of park or facility at least once in the previous 12 months, finding that:
  • the percentage visiting conservation areas or nature parks has been relatively stable, but was slightly lower in 2005
  • trends in percentage visiting specialized leisure/learning facilities (zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, planetariums or observatories) are also slipping, and
  • there has been some growht in the percentage of adults visiting historic sites.
Note that with a 22.6% growth in the Canadian population (15 or older) in the same time period, there is significant growth in the actual number of adults who visit these parks or facilities:
  • visitors to conservation areas or nature parks increased from 9.9 million in 1992 to 12 million in 2005 (an increase of 20.5%)
  • visitors to zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, planetariums or observatories increased from 7.6 million in 1992 to 8.8 million in 2005 (15.1%), and
  • visitors to historic sites increased from 5.8 million in 1992 to 2.9 million in 2005 (50.9%).
