The World Tourism Organization has listed 11 tourism megatrends in its ‘Global Forecast / Tourism 2020 Vision:

  • globalization and localization – thinking globally and acting locally
  • polarization of tourism tastes – active/passive, big/small, consumptive/green, safety/risk
  • shrinking tourist world
  • electronic technology and fast track travel
  • consumers call the shots
  • destinations as fashion accessories
  • theme based marketing
  • increased destination focus on image – perceptions of potential visitors is critical
  • everyone chasing Asian tourists
  • consumer-led campaigns – for sustainable development and fair trade tourism that better distributes benefits
  • conscience vs. consumption – growing conflict between socio-environmental consciousness and urge for travel consumption.
