Overall Trends in US Arts Participation (1982-2002)

The National Endowment of the Arts produced the 2002 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts in the United states. The tables below compare 2002 results with previous surveys in 1992 and 1982. There are few dramatic shifts in participation rates (% adults participating at least once in the past 12 months). However, overall population growth results in significantly larger numbers participating (attending/visiting/reading).

The picture is different when you look at the number of US adults who actually perform or create art. Each activity has experienced a reduced percentage of the population performing or creating art with the exception of music composition. The absolute number of people involved in creating or performing has also fallen except for composing muxid and writing (poetry, novels, plays and short stories).
